Rethinking “Restricted” vs “Independent” in Financial Advice

The financial advice industry relies on the labels “restricted” and “independent” to differentiate types of service. But as Roger Brosch discusses in a recent Professional Adviser article, these terms may be increasingly outdated and unhelpful for clients. Rather than offering clarity, Roger Brosch says that, “at best, they can be unhelpful and, at worst, they can be misleading and de-influencing…”

Roger suggests that it’s time for the industry to move past these rigid terms and, similarly to how language evolves, adopt words that better reflect what clients care about: clear communication, scope of choice, and value.

By moving toward client-focused language, advisers can foster clearer understanding, remove bias, and help clients make more informed decisions.

As Roger states, “…in an industry built on trust, clarity isn’t a luxury, it’s a responsibility.”
