The lessons I’ve learned on adviser recruitment

Paul Mattock, Head of Partnership Recruitment at Foster Denovo, discusses the key lessons he has learned throughout his career in a blog post in Illuminate magazine.

“When recruiting new advisers, it can be difficult and time intensive to find the standout candidate.

Even once you offer the job to someone, they may not fit in as you had hoped. But by following a few simple principles, you can significantly increase the chances of finding the right adviser for your firm.

I’ve had the opportunity to recruit nearly 100 advisers in the past four years. Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned through the process.

Getting out there

We all want the best candidates, but rarely do they just fall into your lap. So be prepared to put yourself out there and search for the right person.

Keep interviews to a minimum

Choose your interviewees wisely. It’s worth remembering you have to earn the right people in front of you.

The interview

When I’m interviewing, I’m simply keen to demonstrate I’m listening. That’s really important. I want to hear all about who they are, where they came from and what makes them tick.

Dealing with rejection

When I first started in recruitment, somebody told me to never get hung up on a candidate. If they don’t want to join you, move on and don’t take it personally. I have stuck by that advice ever since.

What about retention?

Recruiting new advisers is one challenge, but keeping them motivated and wanting to stay is another.”
